Личинки бабки народжуються та живуть у воді, в той час як дорослі комахи літають над водоймами. З грецької їхня назва [Odonata] перекладається як «Зубатий», адже вони мають особливу щелепу. Забарвлення їхнього тіла залежить від виду і може бути коричневими, синіми, жовтими, зеленими або червоними. Як і крила: зазвичай вони прозорі, але, залежно від виду, мають густе мереживо різних кольорів.
